The History of the Treasure Coast

In July 1715, an armada of a dozen ships carrying twelve million dollars of new world treasure set sail from Cuba bound for Spain. Laden with precious metals, jewels and other valuables, they were ordered to return to Spain, at whatever the cost, in hopes of aiding Spain’s war-troubled economy. With the strong currents of the Gulf Stream pushing them along, the ships unknowingly sailed north on a collision course with an intense storm churning in the Florida Straits. Six days into their journey they feared the worst, as clear skies and gentle ground swells quickly transformed into violent breaking seas with blinding wind and rain.

Unfortunately, the brave sailors would never reach their native Spain as the stormy ocean laid claim to all but one of the ships. Most were grounded on nearby beaches while others succumbed to the large waves and sank offshore, leaving treasure for opportunists to find for many years to come. This is why the stretch of coastline from Jupiter extending northward to Sebastian Inlet is called the Treasure Coast.

Fortunately, technology now notifies us of approaching storms making coastal living one of the most desired in the country. Although treasure can still be found while walking area beaches, the Treasure Coast is now more famous for its amazing climate and diverse, laidback lifestyle.
